By a staff reporter:
The Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce has suggested that National Flour Mills look at alternatives to wheat. Speaking with ie news on the matter on Tuesday, the Chamber’s President Richie Sookhai said in this way prices can be stabilised so as to not hurt the most vulnerable in society.
Last week, majority Stated-owned NFM announced that, effective Monday, the wholesale price of flour will increase by between 15 and 22 per cent. It said the suggested retail price of flour to the consumer would increase by an average of 19 per cent. Now according to Mr Sookhai, this could also mean that employers may be potentially faced with increasing workers wages as well. He is therefore suggesting that Government step in to assist. Ie News also took the opportunity to ask Mr Sookhai about his expectations for the Chamber for 2022. He is predicting more or less the same environment as the past 2 years, and further noted that more sustainable ventures should be pursued from the profits derived from the energy industry
