By Chandrayee Roy Choudhury, Canada: Alberta will donate $1 million toward humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine as Russian aggression in the country escalates.
Premier Jason Kenney announced the donation for medical and first aid to the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation on Wednesday, hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized military operations in the Eastern European country.
“We are standing on the precipice of what could become the single largest act of military aggression and armed conflict in Europe since 1945,” Kenney said.
“I know there are many here in Alberta and in Canada who think that this is some distant conflict in which we have no interest, which we should ignore. (That) would be a terrible mistake.”
Kenney blamed U.S. imports of foreign oil and U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline for financing Russian aggression. Kenney also called on the federal government “to spare no effort” in providing military equipment, humanitarian support and stronger economic sanctions.
