BSF FOILED SMUGGLING ATTEMPT THROUGH RIVER, SEIZED 10.6 KG OF SILVER ORNAMENTS

 On June 28, 2021 Border Security Force troops under South Bengal Frontier thwarted the efforts of smugglers and seized 10.6 kg of Silver jewelry worth Rs.4,50,168/-. These silver ornaments were being smuggled to Bangladesh from the Border Out Post Hakimpur, Dist- North 24 Parganas.


On 28 June acting on the information received by the BSF's Intelligence Branch, Border Out Post Hakimpur, 112 Battalion, Sector Kolkata alerted the Patrolling Party and the BSF's Quick Reaction Team as soon as the information was received. The Company Commander at the same time deployed a special patrolling party in the area as per the information. Around 1315 hrs, troops noticed a suspect (smuggler) with a large bag (potla) moving towards the Sonai River (International Border) who was trying to cross from India to Bangladesh for the purpose of smuggling. When the troops on border challenged him, the smuggler started running away by throwing the bag at the same place to save himself, troops chased him but the smuggler jumped into the Sonai river and taking advantage of the deep water, fled towards Bangladesh. The entire area was searched thoroughly by the BSF party and a bag was found on the bank of the river, from inside which 10.6 kg of silver ornaments were recovered.


The seized silver ornaments have been handed over to Customs Office Tentulia for further legal proceedings. Sh. Chandrashekhar, Officiating Commanding Officer of 112 Battalion said that smugglers try to smuggle in their area by adopting new methods and want to take advantage of bad weather. Taking advantage of the dense and high crops, the smugglers are in the pursuit of smuggling. He stated that in order to stop smuggling, he has also sought cooperation from the police officers and other agencies of his area in ending smuggling and getting strict punishment for those involved in smuggling.
