By A Staff Reporter : Caribbean Storm On Sunday morning in the Gulf of Mexico, Alex, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, developed. Alex is forecast to make landfall in southern Florida with heavy rains and strong winds.
Alex had sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph) and was about 270 miles (435 kilometres) northeast of Fort Pierce, Florida, according to a 5 a.m. alert from the National Hurricane Center. The centre forecasts that certain areas of the state might receive more than 10 inches (25 centimetres) of rain, but it does not anticipate extremely high wind speeds or a storm surge.
The storm that struck Mexico's Pacific Coast earlier this week and was known as Hurricane Agatha has been renamed Alex. At least 11 people were killed and 20 remain missing as a result of the storm. Once the storm crossed Mexico and entered the Atlantic basin, it was given a new name.
