New barometer to measure palm oil Sustainability

BY A STAFF REPORTER: Some manufacturing companies in Asia, Africa, and Latin-America's first global palm oil barometer is expected to give a new perspective on the largely debate about palm oil in Western countries. Many believe that this controversial harvest presents more problems and opportunities than many people realize. 


While smallholder palm oil farmers risk living in poverty. According to statistics $282 billion palm oil industry generates huge profits for companies. The important role of smallholders in the palm oil sector, currently contributing to about 30% of global production, is often overlooked on the sustainable agenda, as policies focus on large industrial plantations.

And with their contribution to palm oil production, small traders play an increasingly central role in rural economic development and biodiversity conservation.
