By A Staf Reporter : Gangasagar is one of the Hindu pilgrimage sites.In the coming Makar Sankranti, pilgrims will gather in the Gangasagar to take a holy bath.GangaSagar is located in Sagar Island.Sagar Island is an island located on the continental shelf of the Bay of Bengal.It is located 100 km south of Kolkata.The island is administered by the state government of West Bengal.The area of ​​the island is about 300 square kilometers.There are total 43 villages in this island.The population of the island is about 160,000.Located at the southwestern end of the Sundarban's National Park, the island is about 8 miles wide in the southern direction.To it's west the flow of the Hooghly River, to the east the Baratala Canal, the Hooghly River arose from the Haldi River (ancient Rupnarayan).This territory once had continuous connection with Hijli, but later it was separated. The two northernmost islands – Ghoramara and Lohachura arose later, with the Sagar Lighthouse on its south- west corner built in 1808 AD.





Sagar Dwip has a pilot station of Calcutta Port Authority and a lighthouse. There are pre-Muslims such as Mandirtala, Dhablat, Mansadwip, Harinbari, Sumatinagar, Mahishamari etc., underground pakabari, Devalaya, Patkuyo, Chowbachcha, Chatal, boat coins-ornaments Vishnumurti, Jainmurti etc. Traces of the era have been found. Although there are no archaeological excavations, it is believed to have been the base of King Pratapaditya's royal fleet.
