In the first phase, 16,300 soldiers were in the INA.

BY A STAFF REPORTER:
Indian soldiers who were initially captured by Japan were taken to this INA. Later, Indian volunteers based in Burma and Malaya were also recruited. The force initially consisted of about 16,300 soldiers.

Japan later released 60,000 PRISONERS OF WAR to join the Azad Hind Fauj, but after that, Mohan Singh and Niranjan Singh Gill were arrested due to a dispute between the Government of Japan under Mohan Singh and the Indian troops under Mohan Singh over the role of the Azad Hind Fauj. After Subhas Chandra Bose went to Singapore, the second phase of the Azad Hind Fauj started.
