Has there been a deliberate filling up of a pristine wetland in the Saraswati khaal catchment and canal area of Nimerhati Domjur ? According to environmentalist Nandini Chakraborty, the entire wetland has been systematically destroyed by piling fly ash night and day in contravention to Green Tribunal and PCB directives.
There are more than 40 polluting industries including rubber vulcanisation, acid and galvanising vats. Chakraborty claimed that they are functioning without a single PCB clearance or registration. Illegally.
Locals protesting against this have been silenced under threat and false cases. She alleged that the entire village including the surrounding areas get submerged with flood waters which are knee deep and more in places during monsoons, making life impossible.
The total affected land area is 145 hectares covering many villages in Mohiary, Domjur and Makardah.
