ED claims involvement of influential political figure

BY A STAFF REPORTER: The ED has claimed to have recovered Rs 1.4 crore from the construction company's office in Ballygunge. In a press statement, the Central Probe Agency claimed that the incident was a "larger conspiracy". ED sources claimed that an influential political figure was trying to launder the money of coal smuggling. The money was allegedly laundered through businessman Manjit Singh Grewal. According to ED sources, a property was purchased with coal money. It is learned that the market value of the 10 katha land on Chakraberia Road in Bhabanipur was more than Rs 12 crore. It is shown in the deed that the land has been purchased at Rs 3 crore less than the market rate. The investigating officers estimate that this 3 crore coal is smuggled money. The land was reportedly registered in Alipore on wednesday. The ED claimed that the recovered Rs 1.4 crore was part of Rs 9 crore in the sale of the land. According to the ED, Grewal was also involved in illegal money transactions on behalf of a minister.
