Kolkata (8/3): Sahitya Akademi organized a Nari Chetana Programme with distinguished women personalities from non-literary field namely Aditi Gupta (Singer), Aitrayee Sarkar (Publisher), Anuradha Chowdhury (Theatre Artist) and Dola Banerjee (Archer) who expressed their views on their experiences and challenges in their respective fields on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 08 March 2023 at the Auditorium, Sahitya Akademi, Eastern Regional Office, Kolkata. In the beginning of the programme, Dr Devendra Kumar Devesh, Regional Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, Eastern Region, welcomed and introduced the guests and highlighted on the status of women in the patriarchal society and stressed the need to give them equal opportunities and proper respect. Ms. Aditi Gupta, renowned craftsman of Rabindra Sangeet spoke on her experiences and said that it is not possible that men and women should be able to do each work due to their different specialities, but it is completely unfair to discriminate on the basis of gender.
She also shared her experiences relating to her teaching and boutique business. Ms Aitrayee Sarkar, owner of Rit Prakashan, said that she was fortunate that she did not face any discrimination because of being a woman in the family, society or workplace. She further said that said that it is not impossible to achieve success if you try hard to achieve your goal. Ms. Anuradha Chowdhury, Theatre actress, presented many examples relating to gender discrimination, she said that women will have to move towards becoming self-reliant in every field. She further advised to maintain physical fitness and emphasized on financial independence of women. Ms. Dola Banerjee, renowned Indian Sportsperson and archer, recipient of Arjuna Award apart from winning gold in commonwealth games, spoke on her experiences, achievements and various challenges in her field.
