BY A STAFF REPORTER: Britain said on Thursday it was banning TikTok on government phones with immediate effect, after other Western countries banned the Chinese-owned video app for security reasons. Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden said in a statement, "The security of sensitive government information must come first, so today we are banning the TikTok app on government devices." The use of other data-extracting applications will be reviewed. The British government has asked the National Cyber Security Centre to look into the potential vulnerabilities of government data from social media apps and the risks to how sensitive information can be accessed and used. "According to the advice of our cybersecurity experts, limiting the use of TikTok on government devices is a prudent and proportionate step," Dowden said. '
