The story of Gajasur and Ganesha

By Staff Reporter: There is a story in the Purana about the elephant head of Ganesha. Where it is said that there was a demon called Gajasur. That elephant's head was prominent. Once Gajasur pleased Lord Shiva. And asked Shiva to live in his own stomach as a groom from Shiva. Shiva agreed to Gajasur's request and started living in Gajasur's stomach. But mother Parvati thoughts too much about Shiva's and went out to look for him. Finally with the helped of Lord Vishnu she can know the whole thing. After that when Gajasur was finally killed, Lord Shiva was rescued. However, before Gajasur's death, he wished that his head should be worshiped. Accordingly, Lord Shiva changed his head with his son. From that comes the present form of Ganesha's head.
