Allegations of massive corruption in appointment of librarians

BY A STAFF REPORTER:
Controversy has broken out in the department of mass education and library science over the appointment of around 750 librarians in state sponsored libraries of West Bengal. Sources in the department alleged that minister Siddiqullah Choudhury has taken ``personal interest'' in the appointments.  The 750 librarians are appointed through a screening committee composed of district magistrate, district library officer, zilla sabhadhipati and few other nominees. There are allegations of massive corrupt practices with demands reaching upto Rs 10 lakhs per appointment to the post of a librarian. ``The list has already been made and the interview and examinations are only going to be a formality,'' alleged an official in the mass education department. The needle of suspicion is directed towards minister Choudhury and his coterie. According to department officials, a graduate with diploma in library sciences qualifies for the lucrative job with a remuneration of about almost about Rs 50,000 per month. Minister Choudhury however denied any wrongdoing and termed it as a ``conspiracy.''
