Chinese community dwindling in Kolkata: Overseas Chinese Association

BY A STAFF REPORTER

There has been a steady decline of the Chinese community in Kolkata over the years. According to All India Overseas Chinese Association, (OCA) an umbrella body of Indian Chinese, around 3000 Chinese are in India compared to 50,000 in the sixties and seventies with most of them either returning to China or migrating to Canada. The six key members of the OCA, Chen Yao Hua, Wu Lin Mei Lin, Bean Ching Law, Lee Paoling, Robert Lee and Monica Liu are looking after the welfare of the community. ``We are distributing a Chinese medicine among our community members. The medicine is very effective against flu and other viral diseases,'' Mei Lin told ANM News. ``The footwear industry, once dominated by Indian Chinese community is almost shutting down but the food sector is looking up with Chinese restaurants doing good business,'' said Bean, who has passed out of IIT Roorkee and is currently working in an international IT firm. According to both Mei Lin and Bean, OCA is the only recognised umbrella body of the community which functions officially with the Chinese consulate in Kolkata and local government.
