Diwali and Aurora

By Sudheshna Bhattacharya, Calgary, Canada: Kids finished trick o treating.Images and decorations of Halloween rituals are still in front yards.Indo-Canadians who celebrate Diwali started putting candles.Bengalis are talking about Bhut Chaturdashi and choddo pradip(14 lamps).May be some Bengalis have found forteen corners for keeping their fourteen lamps. But the unexpected and amazing natural light show on the Diwali night surely radiated the festive mood and energy.
Calgary night sky lit up with Northern lights around 10:30 pm.Lot of residents were able to watch the auroral glow from their window and back yard. Of course, more adventures Aurora chasers who found a darker area little far from city, saw the most brilliant show and caught Aurora dancing.

Now, is the northern lights an unusual event to experience in Calgary? No ! Every year people from different part of Canada watch the amazing lights.Calgary is not an exception. But from last two years Calgarians have been watching it more frequently. The reason behind it,is the excellent and reliable forecast to watch Aurora. It is very easy for you to use the app and know about the KP percentage ,even if you are not good in physics.
And the other reason is the active solar cycle . "The frequency of aurora is dictated by something called the solar cycle, which is an 11-year cycle on the sun. So it goes from quiet to active, and we've just been in a period of great quiet and it's starting to become more active”.
So Calgarians are hopping to see and chase Aurora more often as time goes on.
