T&T HEALTH MINISTER SAYS TRAINIG OF ICU NURSES ONGOING DESPITE REPORTS OF STAFF SHORTAGE

By a staff reporter:
Responding to statements made by President of the Trinidad and Tobago Registered Nurses Association Idi Stuart that there is a severe shortage of ICU nurses in the country, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh has noted that there should be a sufficient amount, as a total of 25 Cuban nurses were recently hired and currently 100 registered nurses are being trained. He also said that some 200 nurses recently completing training as well.
On Monday, Mr Stuart on record said over 100 nurses have left their jobs in search of greener pastures abroad and that although the Ministry of Health had increased the number of ICU beds from 50 to 100, there was a severe shortage of specialised nurses to manage these ICU beds.
Responding to questions in the Senate on Tuesday, Minister Deyalsingh made it clear that according to nurses on the ICU ward at the Couva hospital and Multi-training facility, one of the country’s Major covid 19 treatment hospital, the quality of care is not in any way compromised.
