New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly criticized the 2013 amendment to the Waqf Act, calling it an act of political appeasement by the Congress-led government ahead of the 2014 general elections.

Speaking on the issue, Shah stated, "Had the Waqf Act not been amended in 2013, this Amendment Bill would not have been needed. Everything was going well, but just before the 2014 elections, the Congress government made the Waqf Act extreme for appeasement.”

Shah alleged that as a result of this amendment, 123 prime properties in Lutyens' Delhi were transferred to Waqf just 25 days before the elections. The move, he claimed, was politically motivated and executed overnight without broader consultation.
