Union Minister Annapurna Devi has expressed her disapproval of the West Bengal government's handling of the tragic rape and murder case involving a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Devi called the incident "very tragic" and stated that the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, who is herself a woman, should have immediately taken notice of the incident and acted against those responsible.

"But instead, it seems that she is somehow trying to cover it up and attempting to protect the guilty," Devi said. She also mentioned that despite Banerjee's recent letter to the Prime Minister, the women's helpline, which is fully operated by the Government of India, has not been implemented in Bengal.

Devi argued that if the women's helpline were active in the state, it would allow women in trouble to call for help, with calls being transferred to the emergency number 112, leading to necessary action in an integrated manner. "Perhaps, this could have helped a lot of people," she added, emphasizing the importance of such services for women's safety.
