Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai and several party leaders were detained earlier today by the police ahead of their planned protest against alleged corruption in the state-run liquor retailer, TASMAC. The detention sparked political tensions, with BJP accusing the ruling DMK of suppressing dissent.

After being released, Annamalai strongly criticized the Tamil Nadu Police, alleging that they were acting under political pressure from the DMK government.

"Unfortunately, Tamil Nadu Police personnel, for whom I have a lot of respect, have become stooges of DMK. They want to please the CM from morning till evening. It is a very shameful attitude of the senior police officers," he said.

The BJP has been vocal in its criticism of TASMAC, alleging widespread corruption and irregularities in its operations. The party had planned the protest to demand transparency and reforms in the state’s liquor retail system.
