Delhi: Dr VK Paul, a member of NITI Aayog, has praised the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) for its significant impact on healthcare in India. Speaking at a recent event, Dr Paul highlighted that the scheme currently supports 12 crore families with secondary and tertiary care through hospitalizations. He noted that the program addresses nearly all medical conditions and has been exceptionally effective in meeting its goals.

Dr Paul elaborated on the scale of the initiative, stating, “Every day, around 50,000 admissions are made under this program nationwide.” He emphasized that the recent expansion of the AB-PMJAY to include all citizens aged 70 and above marks a major step towards universal healthcare coverage. “This expansion is not limited to poorer or lower middle-class sections but covers all senior citizens,” he added.

The program aims to support the elderly, who, despite having served society throughout their lives, may struggle with the financial burden of complex healthcare needs. “The Prime Minister’s initiative reflects the highest spirit of public welfare and service,” Dr Paul stated. He underscored that this expansion is a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations receive adequate healthcare support.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme continues to be a cornerstone of India’s efforts to provide comprehensive health coverage and improve access to essential medical services across the country.
