Delhi: Rekha Sharma, the former chief of the National Commission for Women (NCW), has strongly condemned the tragic rape and murder of a PG trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Sharma expressed deep concern over the safety of women in West Bengal, questioning whether women are safe anywhere in the state.

"It is a very unfortunate and sad incident... If a woman is not safe at the place of work, where will she be safe?" Sharma asked, directing her criticism toward West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She emphasized that the case should have been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from the outset, rather than after several days.

Sharma further stated, "Women are not safe in West Bengal, and the President's rule should be imposed in West Bengal. The West Bengal government is not being able to save the women of the state. The Central government should intervene."
