In a statement addressing the issue of demography in Jharkhand, Assam Chief Minister and BJP’s state election co-in-charge Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the party’s intent to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. Speaking at a public gathering in Hazaribagh, Sarma emphasized that individuals whose names do not appear in the NRC would be "pushed away to Bangladesh" through legal channels.
“NRC will be done, and the people whose names are not there in NRC, we will have to push them away to Bangladesh. This will be our policy,” Sarma stated. He reassured that everyone would be given the opportunity to present their case during the NRC process, and all legal procedures would be followed. However, he stressed that those who cannot prove their Indian citizenship would face deportation.
Sarma referred to Assam’s own NRC process as an example, noting that 14 lakh individuals had already been identified in the state. He mentioned that the Assam government had approached the Supreme Court for a second revision of the NRC, which could lead to an even higher number of identified individuals. "We have requested the Supreme Court to let us do it one more time. If we get permission, the number will increase further," he added.
