In a recent statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma provided an update on the eviction drive in Guwahati, which experienced significant unrest. Sarma reported that while the operation began peacefully, tensions rose dramatically when Congress started opposing the drive in the morning.

“The eviction drive happened peacefully. When the Congress started opposing the eviction drive in the morning, the situation became worse,” Sarma explained. According to him, a large group of protesters armed with lathis and bamboo sticks attacked the police and government officials who were carrying out the eviction.

The violent confrontation led to injuries among law enforcement and officials. “22 police personnel and a Revenue Circle officer were injured,” Sarma detailed. The escalating violence prompted the police to fire shots, which resulted in fatalities. “Two people died and seven others are injured,” he added.
