Delhi: JMM MP Mahua Maji has shared her views on the recently passed anti-rape bill in the West Bengal Assembly, calling for careful consideration of its implementation. Referring to the aftermath of the Nirbhaya gang rape incident, Maji noted that while several stringent laws were enacted, their proper implementation was lacking. "Many strict laws were passed after the Nirbhaya gang rape incident," she said, "but the implementation which should have happened did not happen."
Addressing the recent rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Maji described the incident as "very unfortunate" but also criticized the BJP for allegedly politicizing the issue. "The BJP also tried to play politics over it," she added, highlighting the need for a more balanced approach.
Maji expressed concerns about the potential misuse of the new anti-rape bill, suggesting that such laws could sometimes be used to unjustly punish innocent individuals. "These kinds of bills can also be used to give punishment to innocent people," she warned. Emphasizing the importance of thorough deliberation, she urged that "law should be given its due time and these kinds of bills should not be passed in a hurry."
Maji’s comments underline the need for careful legislation and thoughtful implementation of laws to ensure justice and prevent misuse.
