Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has shared updates from his Himalayan conservation mission, highlighting the widespread support his campaign has received across Himachal Pradesh. Speaking from Lahaul and Spiti, Wangchuk expressed gratitude for the assistance and enthusiasm encountered from local communities and the government.

“As soon as we entered Himachal Pradesh, we received immense support in all the villages and valleys,” Wangchuk said. His mission aims to raise awareness about the conservation of the Himalayas, which are crucial for the region's ecological balance and water supply.

Wangchuk detailed the journey of his team, noting that they initially set off from Ladakh with 100 participants. Due to challenges faced by elderly members on high passes, they had to return, leaving 75 to continue. However, their group has since expanded to 150-200 participants as more people joined along the way.

The activist emphasized the critical need to remind the government of its promises made five years ago concerning Himalayan conservation. “We are on a mission to remind the government to fulfill the promises it made to us,” Wangchuk stated. He highlighted the importance of glaciers in the upper Himalayas, which provide essential water resources for all of North India. “If these glaciers are lost, everyone will face a severe water shortage,” he warned.

Wangchuk’s campaign also focuses on raising public awareness about the importance of preserving these vital natural resources. His efforts are receiving significant backing, underscoring the collective commitment to protecting the Himalayan ecosystem.
