The Supreme Court has dismissed the Gujarat government's review petition, which sought to expunge certain remarks made against its handling of the premature release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case. The petition challenged the court’s earlier observations regarding the government's conduct in releasing the convicts.
In its ruling, the apex court stated, "We are satisfied that there is no error apparent on the face of the record or any merit in the review petitions, warranting reconsideration of the order impugned." The court made it clear that it found no justification for revisiting its previous decision and upheld its earlier judgment.
The dismissal of the review petition leaves intact the critical remarks made by the court concerning the Gujarat government’s actions. The premature release of the convicts, who had been convicted for gang rape and murder during the 2002 Gujarat riots, has been a subject of widespread public outcry and legal scrutiny.
