Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the significance of Tata Group's semiconductor fabrication unit in Assam, describing it as a pivotal move in India's drive toward technological self-reliance. Speaking in Delhi, Scindia highlighted how semiconductor fabrication, or "fab," plays a crucial role in telecom equipment, powering everything from mobile phones to routers.

“So, the fab is backward integration which involves chips that go into every single part of telecom equipment," said Scindia, explaining the critical need for these components in modern communications infrastructure. He noted the government's focus on establishing a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, calling it "a part of your circuitry for life."

Scindia credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for pioneering this backward integration strategy, which aims to reduce India's dependence on imports for such critical components. "Now, you have multiple fabs coming up in India," he added, pointing to ongoing projects, including a second fabrication unit in Gujarat.

The Minister also spoke about India’s recent agreement with the United States to manufacture semiconductor fabs for defence purposes, a move that is expected to strengthen both countries’ defence manufacturing capabilities.

Scindia concluded by stressing the strategic importance of these initiatives, stating that they not only bolster India’s technological prowess but also position the country as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
