BY A STAFF REPORTER: Football holds a cherished place in the hearts of millions in India, especially in Bengal. Swami Vivekananda famously declared, "Playing football is better than reading the Gita," capturing the profound connection between the sport and the region's cultural fabric. This sentiment is deeply rooted in the history of football in India, marked by significant moments such as Mohun Bagan's historic victory over the British in the IFA Shield of 1911—a triumph that remains a proud emblem of national pride and resistance.
