BY A STAFF REPORTER: Gunmen stormed a room in a men's hostel near the eastern South African city of Durban, killing eight people and wounding two others. Police said eight people died on Sunday.
Two others were taken to hospital with injuries and one of them was a man who jumped out of a hostel room window to escape the firing. Police said 12 people were drinking in the room when several gunmen opened fire at them and then fled. Two people in the room were unharmed.
In the first three months of this year, an average of 30 people were killed every day by firearms in South Africa.
