Bangladesh on the boil

BY A STAFF REPORTER: Is the US government planning to impose sanctions including visa restrictions on individuals responsible for undermining democratic process in Bangladesh?

The US government has raised a flag of concern at the current situation in Bangladesh and has threatened to impose sanctions on persons responsible for the arson and violence. Indian government has taken a wait and watch policy and cautious approach with the foreign ministry refusing to get drawn into the ``internal affairs of a neighbouring country.'' But the ground situation in Bangladesh is extremely fragile. There is a discontent among the minority communities specially the Hindu community with land sharks and grabbers pouncing on their property.

ANM News spoke to several leaders and ordinary citizens and found out that corruption is one of the major issues apart from forcible land grabbing. Most of the high flying industrialists and political leaders have allegedly looted from the state exchequer and unemployment is on rise. Leaders of the minority communities mentioned that India should not be seen as condoning all acts of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami league government or else there will be an immense backlash at the grass root level.
