Washington D.C.: In a sharp rebuke of previous U.S. administrations, President Donald Trump on Thursday blamed former leaders for failing to address trade imbalances with China, asserting that the current trade tensions stem from years of inaction and misguided policy.

“I blame the people sitting right at this desk, right behind this desk or another desk for being stupid and not having the courage,” Trump said, referring to past presidents. “This should have been done years ago—this should have been done before Obama; not only Biden, Obama,” he added, underscoring what he sees as bipartisan failures in confronting China’s growing economic influence.

Trump also criticized the World Trade Organisation (WTO), claiming it favored China by classifying it as a “developing nation,” a designation that affords certain trade benefits. “This started with the World Trade Organisation which was owned by China, it was owned and paid by China,” Trump stated. “They said they were a developing nation—we are a developing nation if you think about it.”
