BY A STAFF REPORTER:  When the 2023–24 Indian Super League (ISL) season began, Jayesh Rane was unsure of what to expect from his forthcoming loan with Mumbai City FC. He assumed it would be the same at Mumbai City as it had been difficult to get game time at his parent club, Bengaluru FC, the previous season.

"Des Buckingham, the former coach, made the transition simpler for me. He informed me that since I was the offensive player he was seeking for, I would fit right into his game plan. However, he had a group of players that he had been collaborating with for some time. I therefore recognized that it would be challenging to obtain playing opportunities, but I saw it as a challenge. The risk paid off. After defeating Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the championship game, Mumbai City FC emerged as the ISL winners earlier this month, marking the end of the season. Rane became the only Indian player to win the ISL trophy with three different clubs when he lifted the glistening trophy for the third time.

Even though Rane was signed by Bengaluru FC to play offensive midfield, which is his preferred position, he only saw one start during the entire previous season. After Buckingham left in November 2023, Petr Kratky took over as his replacement. That's when Rane's circumstances improved. His loan period will be most remembered for an incident that altered the course of Mumbai City's season, which would have otherwise finished without a trophy, and is now ingrained in club legend.
