NEW DELHI – Dr. Duvvuri Subbarao, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, shared his reflections on India's population control efforts during a recent statement, shedding light on his long tenure in government service and its shifting perspectives on population growth.
Having worked in the government for five decades, Dr. Subbarao recalled that when he first joined the civil service, population control was viewed as one of the country’s biggest priorities. At the time, it was believed that population growth was undermining India's development gains.
However, Dr. Subbarao expressed concern over the recent political shift in rhetoric, with leaders now advocating for population growth as a strategy for development. “The subtext of the message is that some states which have done well in population control are losing out,” he noted.
Despite this, he disagreed with the notion that expanding India's population would address the country's challenges. “I don't believe that growing population is one solution because India is a country where we still have a population problem at the aggregate level,” he emphasized, urging a more thoughtful approach to addressing the country’s demographic issues.
