Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024, underscored the crucial role of women in the nation’s growth, declaring that societies that provide greater participation to women progress at a faster rate.
PM Modi emphasized, “Today, India is in an era of women-led development. In the cooperative sector, women’s participation is over 60%, and we are committed to further increasing this involvement.” He elaborated on the government's efforts to empower women by making significant changes in the governance of cooperatives.
The Prime Minister revealed that the government had amended the Multi-State Cooperative Society Act, making it mandatory for cooperatives to have women directors in their management. This legislative step aims to ensure that women play a central role in shaping the cooperative sector’s future and contributes to their overall empowerment.
Modi further emphasized that the cooperative sector’s growth would be driven by inclusivity and equal representation. “The more women participate, the more rapidly the society and country will develop,” he stated, reiterating the importance of fostering an environment where women can thrive in leadership roles.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of empowering women across all sectors of society, reinforcing its commitment to gender equality and inclusive growth. The move aligns with India’s focus on building an economy where women’s contributions are fully recognized and celebrated.
