Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu – On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical lift sea bridge, marking a major milestone in the nation’s rail infrastructure. He also flagged off a new train service connecting Rameswaram to Tambaram (Chennai), further enhancing connectivity across Tamil Nadu.
The New Pamban Bridge, built parallel to the iconic century-old structure, is a technological marvel. With a vertical lift span that rises to allow the passage of ships, the bridge represents a major leap in India’s engineering and maritime innovation. It will significantly improve the speed and safety of train operations to and from Rameswaram, a vital pilgrimage and tourist destination.

“This bridge is not just a symbol of development, but also a tribute to the spirit of connectivity and devotion that Rameswaram represents,” PM Modi said during the inauguration ceremony. The project is expected to enhance regional trade, tourism, and spiritual travel, especially benefiting southern Tamil Nadu.
The new Rameswaram–Tambaram train service is also expected to ease passenger flow and provide a more efficient route for pilgrims traveling to the sacred temple town. Both initiatives align with the government’s focus on multi-modal infrastructure growth under the PM Gati Shakti plan.
