Karwar, Karnataka – On the occasion of National Maritime Day, April 5, 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh marked a significant moment in India's maritime journey during his visit to the Karwar Naval Base. Describing it as a “remarkable milestone,” Singh praised the Indian Navy’s evolving role in national security, regional partnerships, and economic development across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The visit included a comprehensive overview of Project Seabird, one of India’s most ambitious naval infrastructure projects, which is rapidly transforming the Karwar base into one of Asia’s largest and most advanced naval facilities. Singh noted the project's role in not only boosting naval strength but also enhancing economic activity and maritime logistics in the region.

A key highlight of the day was the flagging off of INS Sunayna under the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR mission. This deployment symbolizes India's deepening maritime engagement and strategic outreach to IOR nations, strengthening regional friendships and cooperation under the principles of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

Singh also conducted a detailed review of the Navy’s combat readiness and future operational plans, reaffirming India’s commitment to maritime dominance and technological advancement in naval warfare.

“In the true spirit of Mahasagar, the Indian Navy continues its exceptional commitment to ensuring maritime security, engaging with IOR nations, and contributing significantly to nation-building,” Singh stated.

He concluded with a powerful reminder: “This day is a reminder of how vital our maritime domain is, not just for India's security, but for fostering harmony and growth across the region.”
