A fish-push to the palate

When in Bengal, fish is a must in the palate. The state government has embarked on an ambitious plan to increase production of fish. According to senior officials of the state fisheries department, efforts have been initiated to preserve and cultivate some known varieties of fishes which are tasty, popular among those who love eating various kinds of fish but are not widely available in the market.

Fisheries department officials informed there is a demand of 2.5 lakh metric tonne of fish for state's consumption but production is about 2 lakh metric tonne. The state fisheries department is also planning to tap into the taste buds of the people by introducing various fish and chicken items through the government owned outlet Benfish. The first Benfish restaurant has come up near the Benfish tower in Sector V in Salt lake and is already a hit with the locals. Officials claimed that there are plans to set up several such outlets.
