Owaisi Asaduddin Moves To SC. Seeks Stay On CAA

BY A STAFF REPORTER: In a significant development, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the newly implemented Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 and (rules) 2024 on March 16, Saturday. 

Moreover, Owaisi stressed that no application seeking citizenship be entertained or processed under Section 6B of the Citizenship Act 1955, which has been amended by the latest Citizenship Amendment Act (2019) during the pendency of the proceedings. 

 Section 6B of the Citizenship Act, 1955 lists provisions for certain people who migrated from Pakistan which states that if an individual moved to India after July 19, 1948, and they were registered as Indian citizens by an officer designated by the government of the Dominion of India in that regard after they applied to the officer prior to the Constitution's enactment; however, no one can be registered in this manner unless they have lived in India for the six months prior to the application date.

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (2019). Furthermore, the newly-implemented CAA will be called 'The Citizenship Amendment Act (Rules) 2024'. The Act aims to grant Indian Citizenship to the refugees and migrants belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, Jain, and Christian communities who arrived in India before 31st December 2014 and faced persecution in their homelands.
