BY A STAFF REPORTER: Many may not know that Syama Prasad Mkherjee played a big role in the rise of West Bengal. When the Congress as the single largest political party was indifferent to the League government, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was one of the most prominent members of the policies of the time. He openly opposed the communal policies of the Muslim League and the effectiveness of the then government on every front. The Calcutta Municipal Bill was introduced in the Bengal Assembly by the then government, under which there was a provision for separate elections for Muslims. If there was one leader who strongly opposed the Bill at that time, it was Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The League government was conspiring to limit the participation of Hindus in Hindu-dominated areas, which they opposed. It is alleged that the government's plan was to isolate Hindus and make Bengal a part of Pakistan.
