Chandigarh, April 4 — Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij has strongly defended the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, asserting its constitutional validity and accusing the Congress party of decades-long "appeasement politics." His remarks come amid sharp criticism from sections of the opposition and community leaders who have voiced concern over the bill’s provisions.
Speaking to the media, Vij said, “Under Article 14, everyone has equal rights, but due to Congress’ appeasement politics, they have kept this community—referring to Muslims—above everyone else.” He emphasized that the bill was passed through proper parliamentary procedure, with wide-ranging discussions and inputs from all political parties.
“Our government was more liberal than any other. We even constituted a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) comprising members from across party lines. After thorough deliberation in both Houses of Parliament, the bill was lawfully passed,” he added.
Vij criticized opposition parties and certain community representatives who have opposed the bill post-enactment. “Now, if they say they won’t accept it, then it is not just opposition—it’s disrespecting Parliament itself,” he asserted.
