Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC and Telangana Jagruthi President K. Kavitha staged a day-long hunger strike at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park on Tuesday, demanding the installation of a statue of noted social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule in the Telangana Legislative Assembly premises.

The protest comes ahead of Phule’s birth anniversary on April 11. Kavitha urged the government to honor his legacy by ensuring the statue is installed before the commemorative date.

"Jyotirao Phule was a pioneer of social justice, education for all, and women's empowerment. Honoring him in the Assembly is not just symbolic but essential to keeping his vision alive in governance,” Kavitha said during the strike.

Supporters and members of Telangana Jagruthi joined the protest, holding placards and raising slogans echoing Phule’s contributions to social reform. Kavitha emphasized that the demand transcends party lines and reflects the broader aspirations of marginalized communities in Telangana.
