Colombo, April 5 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the iconic Independence Square in Colombo today, as part of his official three-day visit to Sri Lanka. The welcome ceremony was held with full state honours, highlighting the deepening diplomatic and cultural ties between the two neighbouring nations.
PM Modi arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday following his participation in the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. His visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors including trade, security, connectivity, and cultural exchange.
The ceremonial reception at Independence Square — a landmark associated with Sri Lanka’s liberation from colonial rule — underscored the symbolic importance of the visit. Top Sri Lankan officials and military personnel participated in the honour guard, reflecting the strong political and strategic partnership shared by the two countries.
During the visit, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Sri Lankan President and Prime Minister, engage with Indian diaspora representatives, and announce developmental initiatives supported by India.
