Howrah Water Crisis Resolved, Review Meeting Held to Assess Situation

Howrah: The four-day-long water crisis in Howrah has finally been resolved, bringing much-needed relief to the city's residents. The disruption began last Friday due to a landslide in the Baghad area of Belgachia, which severely affected water supply across Howrah, particularly in North Howrah and Shibpur constituencies. Other areas also experienced supply disruptions, escalating the crisis.

Responding to the emergency, Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) engineers launched a round-the-clock repair operation under the leadership of Mayor Dr. Sujoy Chakraborty. With rapid and coordinated efforts, the damaged pipelines were restored, and by last night, the city's water supply was fully operational again.

To assess the root cause of the crisis and prevent future occurrences, a review meeting was held on Tuesday morning. The meeting was attended by Ghulam Ali Ansari, Principal Secretary of the West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department, along with Howrah Municipal Commissioner Vandana Pokhriyal and other officials.

Several key decisions were taken, including the relocation of approximately 65 families from the affected area. Additionally, restrictions have been imposed on the load-bearing capacity of dumpers operating in the region to prevent further damage.

A specialist team from Jadavpur University has also been assigned to conduct soil testing in the landslide-prone zone. The test results, expected within a week, will help determine the next course of action for ensuring long-term stability and preventing future disruptions.
