BY A STAFF REPORTER: The early history of West Bengal dates back to the 3rd century BC. The history of Bengal begins in 1947, when the Hindu-majority western part of the British territory of Bengal was formed. After the death of Emperor Aurangzeb in the early 1700s, Proto-Industrial Mughal Bengal became a semi-independent state under the Nawabs of Bengal. Looking back 1400 years, it would not be wrong to assume that Shashank Gaur of Gaur was the first king of Bengal. Despite all this, King Shashanka remains a footnote in the mainstream of Indian history. After him Gopala assumed power and established the Pala dynasty. The Palas built a vast empire and ruled for four centuries. After the Pala kings, Bengal was ruled by the Sen dynasty, which was defeated by the Muslim rulers of Delhi. Before the beginning of the Mughal period in the sixteenth century, Bengal was ruled by many Muslim kings and sultans.
