Washington, D.C. | US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and auto parts, a move aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing in line with his ‘America First’ policy. The new tariff, set to take effect from April 3, 2025, applies to all exporting nations and is expected to disrupt global automobile trade.
While several major car-exporting nations, including Japan and Germany, may see significant impacts, Indian industry experts believe the effect on India's auto sector will be minimal. EEPC Chairman Pankaj Chadha noted that India's direct auto exports to the US remain limited.
“He (US President) wants to have manufacturing of automobiles and automobile parts in the USA... but our exports of auto are not that much. It's very minuscule, so that will not impact us. But it doesn't mean that this entire USD 6.9 billion will be impacted. The proclamation is yet to come, the detailing... it will have the HS code numbers which are impacted,” Chadha explained.
