New Delhi: Responding to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s sharp critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri called for a more informed and nuanced approach to the matter.

Gandhi had earlier remarked, “Trump blew the lid off the illusion, and Modi is nowhere to be seen,” referring to the tariff spat and accusing the Prime Minister of remaining silent while India’s economic interests were challenged.

When asked about the comment, Puri dismissed the criticism as uninformed. “I would suggest anyone who wants to talk about tariffs to first get a reasonable understanding of what tariffs are,” said Puri, emphasizing that tariffs serve multiple purposes and are part of a complex international process.

“There is a process—tariffs have various functions, they have effects, and the process has begun. It is an important issue,” he said. Urging patience, Puri added, “We should exercise both circumspection and understanding, and allow the situation to evolve.”

He further assured that the matter is being dealt with at the highest levels. “Piyush Goyal would be looking at it,” he said, referring to the Union Commerce and Industry Minister who is expected to lead India’s response to the tariff developments.
