New Delhi, April 5 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to India’s long-standing maritime traditions on the occasion of National Maritime Day, reaffirming his government’s commitment to bolstering the sector as a key driver of the country’s development.
In a post on social media, PM Modi stated, “Today, on National Maritime Day, we recall India’s rich maritime history and the role played by this sector in nation-building. We will continue to strengthen the maritime sector and our ports for India’s progress.”
India, with a coastline stretching over 7,500 kilometers and 12 major ports, has a deep-rooted maritime legacy dating back to ancient civilizations like Lothal of the Indus Valley. National Maritime Day is observed annually to commemorate the voyage of the first Indian merchant vessel, SS Loyalty, which sailed from Mumbai to London on April 5, 1919.
