From a leather tannery to a school for the slum children. The Chinese community in Tangra is trying hard to stay afloat. Snaking across narrow lanes, a once massive two storied building which housed a tannery has been converted into a school. The Stars Welfare Society, is a voluntary organisation run by Yasmin, a Parsi married to a Chinese. They used to run a tannery and had shifted to Bantala. The cost of production in Bantala is very high, they claimed adding that they even had to buy water. The family shifted focus to trading and running the NGO. The Chinese Consulate lent out a helping hand with the Consul General Zha Liyou and fellow diplomats from the consulate visiting the place and distributing goodies. They also interacted with the children and members of the voluntary organisation and assured them of all help.
