He never gave water to the patriarch. But Karan said, there is nothing wrong with him, he came to know about his ancestor the night before his death. Then Indradev allowed Karna to return to death and give earth to the patriarch. Similarly Karna returned to the earth and gave water to the patriarch. 'Tarpan' starts from that.
