New Delhi | Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha on Thursday strongly criticized the United States' decision to impose a 26% 'reciprocal' tariff on Indian exports, calling it an unfair return on India’s friendship and economic concessions.
Quoting a poBy A Staff Reporterpular Hindi song, Chadha remarked, "Acha sila diya tune mere pyar ka," implying that India’s efforts to maintain a strong trade relationship with the US were met with betrayal. He pointed out that despite India’s proactive steps, including the removal of the 'Google tax'—a digital services levy aimed at protecting American tech giants—the US still chose to impose heavy tariffs.
"India left no stone unturned to maintain the friendship. Even the Union Finance Minister removed a tax called the 'Google tax' to protect the interests of American companies. But what did we get in response to that?" Chadha asked.
Expressing concern over the economic impact, he warned that the tariff hike would severely affect Indian businesses, particularly those relying on exports to the US. "It will have a huge impact on our companies," he stated, urging the Indian government to take a firm stand and negotiate better trade terms with Washington.
